Child labor is one of the major problems in developing
countries including Bangladesh. If a child is made to work from an early age
with no scope of going to school is called child labor. There are several
causes of child labor. Poverty is the main cause of it. Because of poverty,
children have to engage themselves in different risky works with a view to
earning their livelihood. When they supposed to go to school, they have to
go out for their earning. They have to work as day worker, flower seller,
servant at household, hotel boy, tea seller etc. Most of the poor children
are seen to break bricks and stone for house building. Some of them work as
rickshaw puller, some work in garment factories and mills. Most of the time,
they work in very dangerous situation and polluted environment. As a result,
they have to suffer a lot in different kinds of fatal diseases. Child labor
has many negative consequences. It hinders our socio-economic development. It
is impossible to take any kind of progressive activities due to child labor. It
is a great hindrance to the national development for our country. According to
UNICEF, the total number of child labor in Bangladesh is 7.4 millions. We must
work together to get rid of child labor. Effective measures must be taken to
stop child labor. The law of international child labor must be implemented.
Government must take action to educate poor children. Public awareness must be
raised. Thus we can get rid of the curse of child labor.
